Questions about Pilates

Who should attend Pilates?

Men and women of all ages who want effective, high quality exercise that will future proof their bodies. Often people come to us first with niggling aches, back pain, bad posture or joint stiffness and we use Pilates to overcome these issues. We enjoy teaching people from all backgrounds and levels of experience.

What if I have an injury?

We will discuss any previous or current injuries, including any back pain, shoulder pain or hip pain in the 1:1 session. You may be advised to speak to your Doctor prior to doing any exercises.

What do I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, but not too baggy so that we can see how your body is moving. Grip socks or bare-feet are required for all reformer classes.

What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?

Pilates is a workout developed by Joseph Pilates and has a strong focus of strength, stamina, stability and stretching. Yoga is a spiritual discipline that combines postures, with meditation, chanting and teaching. They are fundamentally different practices.

How often should I do Pilates?

At least once a week, but two or more sessions is better. As with any form of exercise you will improve and notice changes more quickly the more you do it. We recommend twice a week to feel it and three times a week for transformation. Amazing affects can be achieved so long as you are consistent with your practice and make it a habit.

Mat or Reformer Pilates. What’s the difference and what shall I do?

Mat

On the mat your body weight provides resistance against gravity; you learn to be in full control of your body. Mat work is a great option for beginners because of its emphasis on learning how to control your muscles during exercises. Many clients see results (improved strength, posture, agility, flexibility, toned muscles) within just a few mat sessions.

Reformer

The Pilates reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment, originally designed by Joseph Pilates. The Reformer acts as a support system for the body by helping assist it into proper alignment. It adds resistance to the Pilates exercises via the use of the springs that form part of the machine.  Extra springs can be added to build strength in the bigger muscle groups, or lower springs can be utilised to challenge the stabilising muscles. The support afforded by the resistance of the machine allows people of all capabilities (including those with limited range of movement or injuries) to safely complete exercises.

So which one?

Still can’t decide between Mat or Reformer Pilates?

Simply, most people will reap similar benefits from both methods. Both will teach you how to effectively use your centre, building strength in your core, which will quickly translate to benefits in your day to day activities.

What we would say is that the reformer is more ideal than the mat for those with injuries or chronic imbalances.

The biggest misconception is that Reformer Pilates is harder than Mat Pilates, when in fact it can be the opposite in an advanced class.  What is important is that regular practice is maintained and that the principles of Pilates (breath, centering, concentration, control, precision and flow) are adhered to throughout a class to maximise the results.

Still can’t decide? We offer Foundation Courses for both Mat and Reformer. So you can try both and see what you prefer.
